Seascape

October 10, 2026 — A simple seascape

A small study in a watercolor journal: a stretch of sea, a sailboat on the horizon, and a shell on the sand. Nothing elaborate — the point was to see how far a few washes and a thin line could go.

Materials

  • Watercolors: Winsor & Newton
  • Journal: Rubens watercolor sketchbook
  • Line: Sakura Micron 0.3

The process

Seascape watercolor, first washes of sky, sea, and sand
1 — Washes
Seascape watercolor with deeper clouds and more detail in the sea and sand
2 — Contrast
Seascape watercolor with the sailboat and the shell added
3 — Sailboat and shell
The finished seascape with ink line work
4 — Line
  1. Washes. Sky, sea, and sand laid in first, with the white of the paper left for the waves.
  2. Contrast. The clouds, the horizon, and the sand pick up more depth and detail.
  3. Sailboat and shell. The two small details that give the scene a scale.
  4. Line. Finished with a Sakura Micron 0.3, broken into short dashes along the clouds, the waves, and the shoreline.
